Internship for a Water and Sanitation Research Study

Duration of Internship: 01st August to 30th October, 2023 (Three months) 

Background of the project 

Safe water and adequate sanitation are indispensable for healthy ecosystems, reducing poverty, and achieving inclusive growth, social well-being and sustainable livelihoods (UN website). Around 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services (toilets, latrines), Nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrhoeal diseases. By 2030, almost 60 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas. 95 percent of urban expansion in the next decade will take place in the developing world. Rapid urbanization is exerting pressure on the living environment, and public health. 

India’s capital is marked by different settlement types, defined by diverse degrees of formality, legality, and tenure. The landscape of Delhi is marked with different types of settlements with distinctive features of each type in terms of level of civic amenities and the status of houses and land. Delhi consists of 1731 unauthorized colonies including Sangam Vihar- Asia’s largest unauthorized colony where the issue of lack of basic civic amenities (including water and sanitation) is prevalent. There are additional 69 unauthorized colonies inhabited by affluent section of the society with better infrastructural facilities.

Research

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) under its Water Management Programme has initiated a study on “Inclusive water, sanitation and storm water management solutions for dense informal urban settlements: Potential and challenges of retrofitting engineering solutions”. Taking a case of Sangam Vihar, Delhi (one of the largest informal settlements in the country).

The candidates are expected to assist the team in undertaking primary research through extensive fieldwork and some secondary research, data analysis and report writing. 

Qualifications: 

Water Management Programme of CSE is seeking 3-4 motivated young professionals, fulfilling the following criteria: 

  • Completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme in urban planning, architecture, environmental engineering, civil engineering or any programme related to water and sanitation.
  • Fresh or with less than a year of work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of water or sanitation and wastewater/faecal sludge management.
  • The job involves extensive field work; hence candidate should be willing to travel.
  • Good communication skills as candidate needs to take personal interviews of various stakeholders.
  • Good knowledge (reading, speaking and writing) of English and Hindi. Knowledge of Hindi (Speaking) is compulsory.    

Stipend 

CSE will pay a stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month for the selected candidates. Internship Certificate will also be awarded at the successful completion of the internship. 

The internship duration can be extended as per the work requirement.
