About CEPT Urban Planning and Design Foundation (CUPDF), CEPT University

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India has designated CEPT University as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Urban Planning and Design in December 2023. CEPT University’s CoE is housed within CEPT Urban Planning and Design Foundation (CUPDF), a not-for-profit company of CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

The main objective of CUPDF is to undertake action research and capacity building across cities and states. Its focus is on enhancing the effectiveness of urban planning and design by identifying urban problems, generating research-based insights and informing cities with tailored solutions to support the implementation of urban projects.

About the Position:

The Research Fellow(s) will play a key role in strengthening CUPDF’s intellectual foundation by building deep expertise in urban planning theory, history, social sciences and humanities. The position requires a deep interest in reading and writing to critically engage with the broader literature that has a bearing on planning and design. The candidate(s) will contribute to shaping India-specific knowledge on urban planning and design by investing substantial time in reading books and other publications and working on real-world problems with a deeper analysis of those problems. They will be expected to prepare notes, write reviews, and translate theoretical insights into resources that inform planning practice, teaching and research.

They will also be expected to participate in ongoing research projects at CUPDF and assist in the curation of lecture notes and training material for capacity building initiatives.

Reports to: Chair of Research at CUPDF

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

Postgraduate degree in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, or related fieldsMinimum 5 years of relevant research experience in academic or applied settingsProven ability to engage with reading and writing on urban planning, theory, historyDemonstrated ability to prepare detailed research notes and synthesize argumentsExcellent academic writing and editing skills in EnglishAbility to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and meet deadlinesPrior academic publishing or substantial research/writing experience is preferred
