About CEPT Urban Planning and Design Foundation (CUPDF), CEPT University

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India has designated CEPT University as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Urban Planning and Design in December 2023. CEPT University’s CoE is housed within CEPT Urban Planning and Design Foundation (CUPDF), a not-for-profit company of CEPT University, Ahmedabad. The main objective of CUPDF is to undertake action research and capacity building across cities and states. Its focus is on enhancing the effectiveness of urban planning and design by identifying urban problems, generating research-based insights and informing cities with tailored solutions to support the implementation of urban projects.

About the Position:

CUPDF is seeking a Research Coordinator – Urban Design with 6 to 10 years of relevant professional experience, preferably following a substantial period of urban design practice, who is interested in pursuing a career in research and contributing to the advancement of urban design knowledge and practice in India.

The position will contribute to the urban design research programme through study, analysis, documentation and coordination of ongoing projects across cities in India. The research coordinator will work closely with the research lead to develop research questions and directions, translate them into structured methodologies and work plans and support the delivery of rigorous, high quality research outputs. 

As part of the core team the position will contribute to building evidence and knowledge around urban form, urban morphology, public realm, public-private interfaces, streets and open spaces, place-making, urban transformation and related themes. The role requires strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, an ability to work across scales and disciplines and an interest in connecting research, design, policy and practice.

Tasks on the job may include:

• Contribute to research studies, literature reviews, field research, data collection, analysis and documentation in the domain of urban design.
• Prepare and review drawings, maps, diagrams, spatial analysis, 3D visualisations and other graphic outputs to communicate research findings and support urban design analysis.
• Review, edit and synthesise research inputs from team members, ensuring consistency, accuracy, methodological rigour, clarity and quality of outputs.
• Contribute to the preparation of reports, presentations, publications, case studies, research papers, policy briefs and other knowledge products.
• Critically assess existing urban design practices, policies, approaches and as part of the core urban design team contribute to developing new perspectives and positions through research.
• Translate guidance from the Lead – Urban Design and Chair of Research, CUPDF into clear research tasks and provide day-to-day direction, methodological guidance and support to junior team members.
• Assist with project coordination and other research-related activities as required.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Urban Design or a related field, with 6 to 10 years of relevant professional experience in urban design, planning or allied fields.
• Strong understanding of urban design and Indian urban development issues with demonstrated experience in urban design projects /research.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to undertake literature reviews, data collection, analysis and documentation.
• Ability to organise workflows and manage tasks independently while working collaboratively in a small to medium-sized multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to translate complex research and spatial analysis into clear written, visual and verbal narratives.
• Proficient with urban design representation tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, GIS.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate, guide and review the work of junior team members.
• Strong interest in urban design research, contemporary urban discourse and the relationship between research, policy and practice in Indian cities.
