About CEPT Urban Planning and Design Foundation (CUPDF), CEPT University

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India has designated CEPT University as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Urban Planning and Design in December 2023. CEPT University’s CoE is housed within CEPT Urban Planning andvDesign Foundation (CUPDF), a not-for-profit company of CEPT University, Ahmedabad.The main objective of CUPDF is to undertake action research and capacity building across cities and states. Its focus is on enhancing the effectiveness of urban planning and design by identifying urban problems, generating research-based insights and informing cities with tailored solutions to support the implementation of urban projects.

About the Position:

The Urban Design Researcher will support activities under the Urban Design Research Programme, contributing to research, analysis, documentation, and representation for urban design studies undertaken across cities in India.

The key tasks include:

• Conducting research and analysis on urban form, morphology, public realm, public-private interfaces, place-making and other related urban design themes.
• Collecting, collating and analysing qualitative and quantitative data through primary surveys, field studies, stakeholder interviews and secondary sources.
• Preparing analytical drawings, maps, diagrams, 3D visualisations and comparative studies to communicate research findings and support urban design analysis.
• Contributing to the preparation of research notes and reports, best practice compendiums, case and precedent studies, benchmarking and performance assessments and other knowledge products.

Other tasks on the job may include:

• Assisting in the design and facilitation of capacity building workshops.
• Supporting documentation of field visits and stakeholder consultations.
• Preparing materials associated with publication and outreach activities.
• Contributing to CUPDF’s social media presence through occasional visual content.

Reports to: Chair of Research; Lead – Urban Design, CUPDF

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

• Master’s degree in urban design or similar, with at least 2 years of experience.
• Enthusiasm and aptitude for conducting rigorous research in urban design.
• Understanding of urban design, urban research, spatial analysis and data synthesis.
• Ability to organize workflows and manage tasks independently while working collaboratively in a small to medium-sized multidisciplinary team.
• Strong written and visual communication skills in English.
• Excellent time management and coordination abilities, with capacity to meet tight deadlines.
• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, GIS.
