In India for over 10 years now, NRDC has been a thought leader and trusted adviser to the partners within the country to tackle climate change and implement energy solution. Since 2009, the India Initiative has combined scientific research and policy acumen to produce game-changing results.

POSITION SUMMARY

NRDC is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative individual to join our India team. In this role, the individual will support execution of our energy efficiency and cooling projects in India.

The Specialist will work closely with the rest of the India Program team, as well as our experts in the US and China. The individual will conduct research, data analysis, and other tasks to prepare high quality outputs such as reports, memos, and presentations that support the advancement of India’s transition to a climate friendly, sustainable, and affordable cooling solutions. The individual should have technical and analytical experience in urban planning and building design.

The position involves working closely with civil society partners, government officials, and other stakeholders and will be on a full-time basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Conduct research on various aspects of building energy efficiency, thermal comfort, net zero buildings, building heat resilience and urban cooling strategies such as cool roofs and other cool surfaces. These include technology trends, market dynamics, policy frameworks, infrastructure requirements, and impact assessment of building energy efficiency and urban cooling practices.
• Review existing building energy efficiency policies, national and state building codes, urban planning programmes etc.
• Prepare clear and concise research reports, policy briefs, whitepapers, and presentations summarizing research findings and policy recommendations.
• Engage with industry stakeholders, academia, government officials, academia, peer research organizations, think tanks, financiers, and other stakeholders to support evidence-based policy formulation on space cooling and urban heat island reduction within the broader sustainable urban cooling practices ecosystem.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, partners to ensure project milestones are met in a time bound manner.
• Work with internal & external stakeholders (such as government, industry, private players and academia) on effective dissemination & outreach strategies.
• Support team activities including project implementation, planning and work area expansion strategies.
• Participate in workshops, conferences, and seminars to present research findings and contribute to discussions on cooling.

REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

• 3-5 years of experience in the field of building architecture and urban planning or energy efficiency, cooling or clean energy, sector in India.
• A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study such building science, urban planning or architecture, energy, or other related fields. Prior work or understanding on buildings and urban planning will be preferred.
• Research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather, synthesize, and interpret data from various sources.
• Knowledge of policies and programs related to: building energy codes, cool surface. technologies and other urban heat mitigation strategies or other related areas.
• Relevant network among key buildings, heat resilience and urban planning stakeholders.
• Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values.

PREFERRED

• Post-graduate is a plus.
• Experience of working with government agencies at national and state level, public sector undertakings and international organizations is a plus.
• Knowledge on Indian urban planning, cooling and green building norms including on technology, policies and city management, and experience in policy and regulatory framework is a plus.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Research and analytical skills.
• Capability to handle multiple tasks, work well under pressure and be detail oriented.
• Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
• A strong interest in climate and clean energy and a curiosity to learn.
• Knowledge of the Indian political system, economic structures, and socio-cultural landscape, and a network of professional contacts in India.
• High degree of proficiency with Microsoft office including Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.
• Ability to stay updated with the latest developments in buildings and urban cooling, technological advancements, and policy changes, both nationally and internationally.
• Experience with any data analysis software (such as Python) and social media tools is a plus
• Ability to travel (20 %) domestically and internationally for meetings and conferences while adhering to the prevailing local and international public health guidelines.
• Ability to communicate by video calls, emails, and meetings with teams in various international locations.
